CWU Rugby Heads to Vegas!!!

The Central Washington University Men’s Rugby team departs Wednesday for Las Vegas to compete is the Las Vegas Invitational 7’s tournament (LVI). Central is eyeing a return trip to Philadelphia in June for the nationally televised Collegiate Rugby 7’s National Invitational. This will require the Wildcats to navigate their way through very tough pool and knock out play. Head Coach Tony Pacheco “is confident his players can continue their success in 7’s Rugby this year and hopefully repeat as LVI Champions.”

The field of 32 is split into two conferences, which are divided into four pools of four. Each team will play its first two pool games on Thursday and its final pool game on Friday. The top two teams from each pool advance to the Cup quarterfinals on Friday, and the Cup semifinals and finals happen on Saturday, with the winner of each conference playing in front of the IRB 7s World Series crowd inside Sam Boyd Stadium at 5:52pm local time to earn the right to play in the June CRC.

Central will play Indiana University at 9:20 a.m. and Weber State University noon on Thursday and Yale University at 9:20 a.m. on Friday. According to Pacheco “Central is considered heavy favorites to win their pool, but we are not looking past pool play. We don’t know much about Indiana or Weber State, and Yale was at the LVI last year. We know the importance of playing well in pool matches; we need to improve each match so that we peak in the final.”

Central is looking to build on a national runner up performance in the USA Rugby 7’s Nationals Championships. The Wildcats will be led by All American candidates Tim Stanfill, Patrick Blair and Andrew Nelson. “Our players are comfortable playing on big stages; we have been here before and know what it takes to win this tournament. It will come down to our execution on the field, hopefully we can stay healthy and win this tournament.” Pacheco added.
